Average Cost of Repairing an AC Unit

The diagnostic fee for most HVAC technicians is followed by services and parts fees. Labor and parts costs are typically included in the fee quoted for parts.

An average service call can cost between $80 and $300. For hourly wages, you can expect to pay anywhere between $60 and $125 per hour. When the diagnostics have been made, then the cost of the parts and labor is estimated. Many times, when an older unit begins to malfunction, repairing it is more expensive and more time-consuming than buying a new one.

AC units come in many types, and each type costs differently. Repaired damage ranges from easy to complicated, from cheap to expensive.

Window ac repair averages about $25 to $125, swamp coolers are $65 to $500, central air is around $75 to $500, portable ac repair is about $100 to $250, and ductless mini-split falls somewhere in the range of $750 to $900.

EnergyStar recommends replacing your AC unit every 10 to 15 years. If you have an eight-year-old or older air conditioning system, it may not be worth the cost to repair it unless the repair is an easy fix, like a worn fan belt or a clogged condenser unit.
